East Texan to be acting College Station official Jun.6.2006 |

One of College Station's key staff vacancies has been filled - at least temporarily.
Terry Childers of Tyler, whose resume includes stints as city manager for Oklahoma City and deputy city manager in Austin, began working Monday as the city's newest interim assistant city manager.
He joins longtime Public Works Director Mark Smith, who has been filling one of College Station's two assistant city manager spots - also on an interim basis - for a couple of weeks.
City Manager Glenn Brown, recently promoted from assistant city manager, has said he will begin interviewing potential candidates in August and hopes to have both assistant posts filled by September.
Childers, a friend of Brown's for more than 30 years, has worked with College Station through his consulting firm, The Childers Group. He has conducted leadership workshops with 15 or 20 College Station employees annually for the past three years, Brown said. When Childers was in town a few weeks ago training some staff members, Brown said he talked with him about the interim job.
"We decided it would be a good arrangement for him to provide help while we're short-staffed," Brown said.
Childers is a contract employee, performing on a month-to-month basis at a salary of $8,900 per month. He will work four days a week through the end of the summer, Brown said.
Childers could not be reached for comment Monday.
Because he has other commitments beginning in the fall, he will not be considered when interviews for the permanent job begin, Brown said. The city's other interim assistant city manager, Smith, said Monday he plans to apply for the permanent post.
College Station still is without a permanent planning and development services director, economic development director and special projects manager. Interim Economic Development Director Charles Wood, who formerly served as the department's assistant director, will leave the city at the end of the week for a job in Pensacola, Fla.
"We're in a team-rebuilding process," Brown said. "We've got a lot of short-term vacancies, but long term, this gives me the ability to put together a team I can work with. It gives me an opportunity to fill some key positions."
In addition to Austin and Oklahoma City, Childers, whose brother is the city manager of Longview, has served as assistant city manager of Tyler.
While working in College Station, Childers will oversee some special projects and economic development matters. He'll also sit in on some meetings in Brown's place.
"I'm comfortable with his capabilities," Brown said. "He's a good person for the short term to get us through this time."
